I was an equity research analyst. I fell into it, by way of a small biotech company that failed to go public, starting out as a lowly associate and moving up to analyst level. I ended up really liking the industry - the fast-paced nature, the stress, and the compensation (I'd be lying if I didn't admit to the last point). After 6 years, though, the lack of sleep and the short-term nature of the business got to me and I decided it was time to get out.
I've moved on to a mid-sized biopharma to be part of the business development team, where I have the luxury of being on the "buy side" (in-licensing and acquisitions). It's been a fascinating experience learning the ins and outs of drug development and what it takes to do a transaction, but it underscores how little the investment world really knows about this business. This blog is a forum to share some of these insights into how a commercial organization thinks and how it runs.
